Firefighters from five area departments battle Friday to contain a chicken house fire in the Elroy community. A neighbor in the 500 block of Ditch Bank Road called the fire department around 12:30 p.m. after seeing smoke and flames erupting from two old chicken houses used to store wheat straw. Elroy Fire Chief Steve Mozingo said that 14 fire trucks responded to combat the blaze. There were no injuries in connection to the fire. The chicken houses, valued at $5,000 each and owned by Ted and Bob Ivy, were a total loss. The hay inside the structures, valued at $10,000 and owned by Charlie Casey, was also completely lost. The fire is currently under investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
