Students at Grantham Elementary School spell out their thanks to the senior citizens who attended Grandparents Day at the school on Friday. The annual event was part of the National Grandparents Day celebration, with today being the official National Grandparents Day. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, W.Va., who championed the cause of the elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.
