A man who was killed Friday night on Starcrest Drive was riding a stolen motorcycle with fraudulent registration, a Highway Patrol sergeant said today.
Maurice Daniel Lawson, 33, of Starcrest Drive, was riding the motorcycle on his home street on Friday night, around 8 p.m., First Sgt. Jerry Burton reported.
Lawson lost control of the vehicle, ran off the left side of the road, struck a mailbox and flipped over, then hitting a parked car, the sergeant said.
Witnesses on scene immediately began CPR on the accident victim, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
Lawson was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Burton said.
During Trooper J.B. Smith's investigation of the accident, he discovered the motorcycle was listed as stolen from Decatur, Ga., the sergeant said.
The vehicle had no listed owner, Burton said.
"From what (Lawson's) girlfriend said, it was probably from the dealership," the sergeant said. "It was registered out of Alabama."
The sergeant said that Lawson may have manipulated paperwork to get the vehicle registered in that state.
No charges will be filed, Burton said.
