The United Way of Wayne County is gearing up for another campaign season with the 19th Annual Taste of Wayne County.
The event is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 11 at Wayne Community College. Those in attendance will be able to sample food from "the finest restaurants in Wayne County," according to the United Way volunteer organizers.
Sally Worrell, vice president of marketing and the chairman in charge of the event, said the Taste of Wayne County is a fun, family, food festival.
"It's a good way to get our name out there. We're trying to have a county-wide event for families," she said. "We have music by Thomas Vick and people can just come in and visit the vendors and get all the free food they want."
In addition to getting the chance to taste lots of different foods, ticketholders will also choose their favorites in several categories -- as well as an overall People's Choice winner.
Although the event will be outside, Mrs. Worrell said there will be seating and large fans available as well as plenty of shade from the trees.
In addition to test tasting samples from area food providers, people will also have the opportunity to learn more about the United Way.
"We're trying to show the community what United Way is doing," Mrs. Worrell said. "We have a booth and people can come by and see us. Hopefully it will be an awareness night about what we give to."
She said the event is expected to raise $6,800 in sponsorships, which pays for the booth rentals and advertising. Tickets sales will go toward the remaining event fees and any money after that will go toward the campaign.
Early bird tickets can be purchased through Friday for $10 each for four or more tickets and $11 each for two to three tickets. After Friday, tickets are $12 each and children under 6 years old get in free.
Tickets can be purchased at Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Recreation Center.
