Joan Landry, assistant conductor for the N.C. Symphony, leads the orchestra's Wednesday morning performance before more than 1,500 Wayne County Public Schools fifth-graders at Kornegay Arena on the campus of Mount Olive College. Private and homeschooled fifth-graders also attended. Many for the first time experienced the classical music performed by the state's top musicians. The purpose of the hour-long concert is to help students gain a greater appreciation of classical music, as well as teach students about the different sections of a symphony orchestra, school officials said. Leading up to the concert, students studied the background of the musical pieces performed and how it relates to the composers' lives and the culture of the times.
