Jayson Hill of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office poses with his K-9 partner, Shelly, a new member of the department. Shelly is a Belgian Malinois and has already proven herself as good detective, helping sniff out illegal drugs during a recent saturation patrol in Mount Olive that resulted in the seizure of drugs, drug paraphernalia, cash, counterfeit cash, a car, a motorcycle and two four-wheelers.

Shelly arrived on Jan. 5, and after two weeks of training in Fayetteville, hit the streets on Jan. 19. Since then, Hill said she's done "an excellent job."

"She's excellent," he said.

Shelly is one of five dual-purpose dogs for patrol and narcotics detection. The office also has one bloodhound for tracking purposes.
