J.R. Nickens
J.R. Nickens, known in the Goldsboro community for more than 20 years as the friendly face behind the desk at the Family Y, died Saturday.
He was 86.
Nickens was honored at a recent reception at the Y and members and staff referred to him more than once as "the face of the Family Y."
A volunteer, he was known for his easygoing demeanor and willingness to help with any chore. He gave tours to prospective members and directed visitors around the facility.
Nickens had continued to work at the Y until January, when health issues forced him to give up his post.
At the reception, Family Y Director John Richards called the facility staff a family and said Nickens was the "father." The wellness center at the Y is named after him.
James Ransom Nickens was a native of Wayne County, a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Dillon Supply Co.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church.
