Arrest made in
school break-ins
A 21-year-old man already in jail on other charges has been charged with breaking into Charles B. Aycock High School .
Linwood Ray Boykin Jr. of Talbert Drive was accused of breaking into the school and stealing property on Jan. 14, Detective Richard Winders said. Boykin was charged after officers had received information about the crimes.
Boykin was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. His additional secured bond on the three felony charges was set at $8,500. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour assisted in the case.
Fatal report
A driver who was killed in a one-car wreck on N.C. 111 North had run off the right side, then overcorrected the steering and crossed the center line before running off the right side again at Stoney Creek Grocery, a Highway Patrol report released today said.
The victim, Edward Preston Poythress Jr., 50, of 313 Church of God Road, died Wednesday in the 6:08 a.m. wreck. Poythress' southbound car had struck a concrete pole, a metal pole and two gas pumps before stopping in the parking lot.
Damage was estimated at $2,000 to the property. Poythress' 1994 Ford, valued at $5,000, was demolished.
The fatality was the fourth in 2006 on Wayne County roads.
Two drivers injured
Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $21,000 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A man on a moped was struck by a car at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at South Slocumb Street and Olivia Lane and injured slightly, Goldsboro police said. Jefferey Jerome Pate, 33, of Memorial Church Road, Fremont, was treated by rescue personnel at the scene. He was charged with driving while impaired. He registered .18 percent blood-alcohol content, the citation said. He was released from custody to a relative. The other driver, Michael Vincente Conley, 20, of Bryant Street, was charged with a stoplight violation. Damages were set at $2,300. The report said Conley's westbound auto had collided with Pate's southbound moped.
*A driver ran off the left side of Wayne Memorial Drive near Cox Boulevard, struck a power pole at 9:24 a.m. Thursday and fled, police said. Danny Roger Kearney, 46, of Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, was found a short distance away was charged with driving while his license, revoked and hit and run and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $500 secured bond. Damage was put at $6,000 to the pole and $500 to the car.
*A car was demolished in a wreck with a tractor-trailer truck at 2 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 70 and U.S. 117, police said. The report said the eastbound truck had collided with a northbound car. The trucker, Wilbert Scarboro Jr., 33, of Kenly, was charged with a stoplight violation. The car, driven by William Ramone Robinson, 24, of Maple Street, was valued at $7,000. Damage was set at $200 to the big rig, registered to Dalton Tyrone Williams of Four Oaks.
*A driver was injured and damage was estimated at $5,000 in a wreck at 6:45 p.m. Monday on Nahunta Road near Hinnant Road, the Highway Patrol said. Marquis Antwan Blackman, 27, of Stone Glen Road, Pikeville, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said the car had run off the right side, had come back on the road out of control, then had run off the right side again, struck a ditch and overturned.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A diamond ring, a silver ring and an amethyst ring were stolen Thursday after a door glass was shattered at a home in the 100 block of Mary Lane, sheriff's deputies said. The thief may have used a softball bat to break the glass. The resident, Kristy Nicole Knotts, estimated the value of the rings at $375 and damages at $75.
*An air compressor was stolen from a carport and tools were stolen from a truck between Monday and Thursday in the 100 block of Woodland Church Road, deputies said. The owner and resident, William Wayne Diehl Jr., put a $1,014 value on the stolen property.
*Thieves spray-painted a rental mobile home in the 100 block of South Ridge Court near Dudley, smashed a door, pulled plumbing from the wall and stole four burners and controls for a stove between Feb. 1 and Thursday, deputies said. The owner, Gamara Sherice Lofton of Goldsboro, estimated damages at $2,400. The stolen property was valued at $60.
*About $1,000 worth of copper wire was stolen between Monday and Thursday from the Seegars Fence Co. warehouse at 401 Patetown Road, Goldsboro police said. The wire had been cut from light fixtures.
Second suspect
charged
A second man was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with two felony crimes in connection with a residential break-in about two weeks ago on McCullen Lane near Dudley.
Victor Antonio Benitez, 20, of Barrier Place, Pikeville, was charged with breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond. He was accused of stealing two televisions, a DVD-VCR player, a stereo system and jewelry, Detective Robert Golimowski said. More charges are possible, he said.
Julio Alberto Barbarena, 23, of Mobile Circle had been charged with breaking and entering and larceny.
Drug charge filed
A 51-year-old Goldsboro woman was arrested Thursday night by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense at South George Street and Wayne Avenue.
Loresse Edmundson of West Grantham Street was charged with possession of cocaine. She also was held on an outstanding arrest order for two traffic offenses. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Grass fires
Wayne County volunteer fire departments responded Thursday to two grass fires. Dudley, Arrington and Mar Mac firefighters went to the 100 block of Jill Court. Seven Springs and Pricetown volunteers were called to N.C. 55 near Price Road. The N.C. Forestry Service assisted at both locations.
